The reason why people fail financially

Reason 1: Lack of “Know How”

The art of making money was not taught at our school system. It is depend on our own effort to gain the necessary knowledge to enable one self to learn and hopefully able to make money in the process.

To be able to acquire the said knowledge is not so easy; it takes time, discipline and effort. Most of us normally don’t read non fiction books. Guess how many average person have read non fictions book in the last year? One? Two? Three?. There’s a good possibility, none of them.

Even the best non-fiction book sells in pitiful numbers, unlike the recent release of J.K.Rowling latest fiction book entitled “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (21 July 2007)”. The books were on sale worldwide and millions of copies were sold, testimony to the different attitude that people have to learning and most importantly it makes the author of the book filty rich.

To be successful in your pursuit to financial success, you must gain knowledge especially in the art of making money ( There's no point of reading all the financial books, money book if you don't know how to make money). You can learn by reading, learning and talking (if you have the chance to do so) with those who have been successful, gain from their experience and ways of making money. Unfortunately, most rich people is stingy especially their knowledge of making money. Most of them go around the bush, not getting to the point and try to make you confuse.

By the way have you download the e-book from john chow “Making Money Online with John Chow.Com”. If you haven’t, I recommend you do so. This e-book help you better manage your money making blog and if you follow his advice, surely you will get something out of this FREE E-Book.

Reason 2: Failure to set plans

This is also very much the reason why people fail financially. It’s like a “rugby team”. They kick the ball in various directions and when the whistle blows at the age of retirement they wonder what the score was!

Research shows that only 5% of the population set goals and only 2 % have any form of written goals. These people are highly motivated, they are result oriented, they are positive, and most importantly they never quit.

After all that have been said and done, one must have a definite plan. Without a plan it is too easy to drift aimlessly, being tempted by many lures that marketeers dangle to separate you from your money.

Hence, it is not that they plan to fail, but rather they fail to plan.

Reason 3: Inefficient use of time and poor work habits.

In our discussion about financial success, most people will excuse them self by saying “I don’t have time, I haven’t got the time, I’m always busy and many more. Nonsense! Everyone have the same amount of time. Be it prime Minister, the president of America and so on and so forth. These people have the same amount of time as we have. It’s just that these people use their time more efficiently. Therefore be a good time manager and manage your time so you can achieve more.

Reason 4: Poor Debt Management

Everybody borrow money for reason of their own. There’s nothing financially wrong about it, as long as you obeyed one basic rule: the income generated from it must exceed what it costs (investment). Unfortunately most people borrow money to buy consumable or unnecessary items, a term usually called “doodads”. Not only they have to pay interest, but the assets itself loses value.

Reason 5: Lack of desire

People have always asked Robert Kiyosaki (very successful US financial Guru) what make him very determine to get rich. He answered, the primary reason he do it because he has a strong desire to be rich and desire motivates him to act.

Furthermore, a strong desire gives a person confidence and looks for more business opportunity.
Anyone who is content with mediocrity will always be mediocre.

Reason 6: Inadequate protection against unforeseen events

While you are in the path of achieving your financial success, one must have adequate protection against any unforeseen circumstances. For example the death or disablement of the breadwinners. Failure to do so may result in a drastic lost of decades of saving or may even cripple your goal to financial success.

Reason 7: Lack of discipline

To many people to foster the habit of saving is nearly impossible to achieve simply because they buy – save – buy – save while other always buy.

Since it is easy to spend than save (same as it is easier to say yes than no), many will fail to save on consistent basis. Those who lack the discipline to say “no” will find financial success an impossible achievement.

Reason 8: Lack of action

Just thinking of doing it without action is not good enough. It was also mentioned in John Chow e-book that most people fail financially because they didn’t do what they suppose to be doing (to do with financial success). In other words, they lack of action. To achieve anything requires action. No action, No gain and No gain, No Money and No money,.......you know the rest.

Do you have what it takes to succeed? Do you have what it takes to be rich? Do you have the desire to learn? Do you have a positive mental attitude? Are you willing to make an effort? The list goes on and on.
However if you answered Yes to all of these questions then you are on the right track and able to achieve your goal to financial freedom or success.

Know Where Your Money Goes To Every Month

(General Guidelines – For the average person on the street)

Before continuing any further, first thing first, if you need detailed help and if you have a lot of money then you will need a financial advisor.

This article is just a simple guideline for those who do not know where their money goes to by the end of every month and for those who have trouble surviving on what little income they get.

CHANGE HOW YOU THINK

To get you (and your family-if any) started, you will need to be humble enough to acknowledge that you are struggling financially and that you need to tone down your lifestyle. Yes your friend, neighbour, colleague or relative may ‘seem’ much better off than you, probably having somewhere nicer to live in, own a car or even a very expensive one, have nice things in their home, wear fancy clothes or that they can go for a holiday often and so on, BUT you must remember, you don’t need to prove anything to anyone. Don’t try to compete with anyone - it’s very stressful. Jealousy is not very becoming of anyone.

WANTS VS. NEEDS

Note everyone knows this but there is a difference between what we need to survive and what we want/desire to make us happy. To survive we have to have the basics like food, medicine, somewhere to live, transportation, a source of money to pay our bills and expenses (example, job, savings, allowance, scholarship, welfare money etc.).

Even then there is the differences in prices for these basic things. Some food are more expensive than others, the same goes with clothes, a place to live, medical treatment, transportation etc. If you have limited budget or money, choose the cheapest. Don’t go to a private hospital, instead go to a government hospital. Don’t buy branded clothes, buy similar but cheaper ones. Don’t eat at a restaurant/cafĂ©, bring food from home. Don’t travel by taxi, go on the bus. Don’t have too many girlfriends or wives, one is enough.

‘Wants’ on the other hand is driven by desire. Often we want that nice, expensive car, we want to go for a long holiday, we want to party every weekend, we want that lovely but expensive sofa set, we want to treat our friends often, we want a nice big house with a garden, we want that diamond ring, we want the latest PDA/ hand phone, we want sports rim for our car, we want a computer for each and every one of our kids, we want that high powered motor cycle etc. Control your wants. Don’t suffer for it.

To be able to manage our monthly income, we have to know the difference between these two, especially during times when we are tempted by our friends bragging, TV/ newspaper advertisements, widow displays, the salesman etc. All telling us that we ‘need’ these things to make us look and feel good.

EXCESSIVE VICES

If you are a gambler, an alcoholic, a drug user or have other problems can lead to the use of a lot of spending money, seek professional advice to kick the habit. Some habits are very hard to get rid off without help. They eat into your finances, into your life and destroy you slowly but surely. Getting help is nothing to be ashamed off. You don’t have to announce it to the world, go alone if you have to but it is better if you have the support of a friend or family to help you on your way.

Another thing that is not as excessive, is smoking. If you calculate how much a packet of cigarettes cost and how much you use in a month, you will notice that it cuts quite a bit into your budget. It is not necessary for survival and you won’t die if you don’t smoke. The craving will drive you crazy but it can be overcome (If you really want to-develop the will power).

FRIENDS CAN BE OUR DOWNFALL

You have to manage yourself and your lifestyle as best as you can. If it is your friends who are living the high life and enjoying themselves excessively, then perhaps its time to find new friends who are more like yourself so that you don’t have to be that much different from them. Learn to turn a deaf ear on people who make fun of you, just because you don’t dress in fancy clothes, drive to work, have a high paying job, enjoy life like them etc. Good friends are reliable and steadfast. They respect you for yourself and not what you have.

If you are ambitious then you can work smart and hard for these things (the legal way of course. Again to avoid trouble in the long run) and enjoy your hard earned money once you actually have it in your bank account. Get a second part-time job if you have to. Start a home business if you have a full time job.

FAMILY LIFE VS. LUXURIOUS LIFESTYLE

If you already have a family, balance your needs and ambitions to a quality life with your family. No point having all that money when you and your family members are not close and don’t enjoy each others company. I have known some people who work too hard all their life only to retire to an empty home where their kids seldom come home or call home to ask how things are. This is because they are so used to dad or mum not being around. Set your priority – what do you want? Money or a close family life? Some people can have both but not everyone can achieve this. A person who is never there is seldom missed. Painful but true. You cannot catch up on lost time. It is better to set a balance.

‘CONTROL’ YOUR DESIRES AND WEAKNESSES. FIND CHEAPER ALTERNATIVES

The best way to manage what little you have is to ‘control’ your desires and spending habit. Find cheaper alternatives to what you would like to do or have. Decide how much you are getting every month and how much money goes into your everyday expenses. Determine which expenses are necessary for survival and which are not. Survival means you will die or end up on the streets/in jail if you don’t have it. For example, if the price of petrol is going up and up, find a cheaper alternative to go to work. Get a motorcycle perhaps or share s car/petrol with a friend who live and work in the same area. Take the train or bus. If it is not too far then use a bicycle (Good for the environment too). Not as convenient but ‘cheaper’ because that is what we are aiming for. Swallow your pride and ego. Remember, you have nothing to prove to anyone. What can you achieve by burning a hole in your pocket/wallet?

Kids are often the main weaknesses of parents. If you have four or more kids and you suddenly have that extra money to buy them a treat, let us say ice-cream. Buy a large container from the local supermarket instead of stopping by at the nearest fast food outlet for it. You save a lot of money this way. If you have just one child and he/she starts screaming and crying for a $200 toy at the store but you don’t have that sort of money. Don’t pull out your credit card. After trying persuasion and it doesn’t work be firm, pick him/her up gently calmly and try to distract him/her with something else. If this doesn’t work perhaps it is time to go home to avoid all the fuss. Most people will understand especially those who have had kids themselves. Children can often get distracted easily and for the more stubborn ones, the parents have to be firm. Don’t give in too easily to their wants (as oppose to needs) otherwise they will do it again and again.

Sometimes it is the parents’ fault that their kids are high maintenance. They want the best for their kids even though they themselves can’t afford it. The excuse is that they want for the kids something which they themselves couldn’t have in the past. For example; a good but very expensive school (Be flexible. Find a middle alternative), piano lessons, clubs (not just one but many), extra art lessons (apart from what they teach at school) and so on. Just because you couldn’t have it as a child doesn’t mean your child has to have it too. Even if you did have the extra luxuries as a child but your current finances do not allow you to, there is not need to give them the extras either. Use your common sense.

BE STRONG, TRY HARDER

Humans tend to have weak will power. Yes, it part of being human. But you can train yourself. All it takes is self determination. Try harder, that is. Don’t give up too easily. Decide on a monthly budget. Keep track of your spending habits. Try not to spend more than what you have. If you spend too much this month, try again next month and the next. Cut down on things that are not important to your survival.

HOW BORROWING AFFECT US

Your life is your own and when you are in trouble especially financially, there is seldom someone there to lend you a helping hand. Borrowing money to lead a better lifestyle is NOT the solution but will get you into more trouble in the long term (This includes ‘borrowing’ money from your friendly credit card, a friend, relative or even worse a loan shark). Remember credit cards and loan sharks charge high interest rates on the money you borrow. For example for every $100 you borrow, you may end up paying $116-$150 at the end of the month. Then if this hasn’t been cleared the amount will go up and up until you clear your loan. Some people get another credit card to pay for the loan they already have, and another, and another etc. This is highly dangerous and stupid. Wouldn’t it be better if that extra money went into your own pocket instead?

Of course if there is an emergency and you or your family need immediate medical attention, by all means use your credit card (because it is a matter of life and death) and use it only in this way. Some people claim that an ‘emergency’ is when they need to buy new clothes for that annual party that everyone is talking about. Please! Use your common sense when deciding what an emergency is. It is not that toy that your child wants, or a night out at an expensive restaurant just to impress your friend/s or a party that you suddenly decided to have. To avoid using your credit card for things that come up suddenly, plan what you normally need to spend on yearly basis (yes it is troublesome but worth the effort). Save a little money every month for emergencies or when you suddenly get some money from an unplanned source. Don’t use it all up in one go.

Stay away from loan sharks no matter what. For those who do not know what a loan shark is. It is someone who profess to have a money lending business but charge very high interest rates. They may not even acknowledge that you have made payments in the past. They tend to resort to illegal ways of getting their money back from you including harassment, violence or taking over your property by force and selling it even though the amount you owe them is not as high as your car, house, land etc. Yet some of them even use legal means to lend you the money (you have to sign an agreement) but the amount you loose if they take over your property is not worth the trouble not to mention the trouble they cause your family, friends and at your workplace.

On the other hand borrowing money from relatives or friends may seem better but if you can’t afford to pay them back, even in small installments, they will nag you until your ears fall off and they will loose trust in you. Then when you need money for emergencies, there will be no one there for you. For those who do not have a thick skin, this can be very stressful too. Honesty is always the best policy. If you do borrow money always try to work out if you can make payments, pay in small amounts every month if you have to but don’t let anyone loose trust in you. If you have a thick skin (no sense of shame), then I pity you. Suffer the consequence yourself. It may last far longer then you expected.

CONCLUSION

We can all survive on the minimum if we try hard enough. Sometimes cutting cost is absolutely necessary for our survival or for our family’s survival. If you can’t afford that house yet, never mind, do without. If you can’t have as much fun as you want at the moment, never mind, do without. If you can’t afford to get married yet, never mind, postpone.

Things may look bleak at the moment or make you depressed, but think positive about the future. Find alternative ways of managing your money and of increasing your income (look up topic).

Problems don’t last for ever and ever. Tomorrow will not be the same as today or yesterday unless, you just sit there and do nothing about it. Remember that.

The power of the subconscious mind

I was once in the state of KO and without direction. Life seems to be so boring and I feel so hopeless. I often questioned myself about what am I going to do next. My life was so messy and disarray.

I was wondering why some person happy and other sad? Why is some people rich and others poor and miserable? Why some people have a beautiful, luxurious home while other persons lives in a pathetic looking house? Why some have brilliant mind other simply dumb? The word “why” keep on bombarding my head, over and over again. I was desperate to know the answer but don’t know where to look for.

A friend of mine did notice some thing is not right about me. He starts asking question to understand the problem in me. Then he gave me this book entitle “The power of your subconscious Mind by Dr. Joseph Murphy. I start reading the book and half way through I begin to understand the cause of all these problem start within our own self. It is the mind that causing this problem. Dr.Joseph Murphy says that the mind is a powerful tool especially the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind can do wonder to a person well being. If you learn to use your subconscious mind effectively, it can heal you from your sickness and make you healthy and strong, overcome phobias, compulsions and bad habits, it can even make you financially sound.

You too can change your life for good by learning how to use your inner powers (subconscious mind) and open up the prison door of fear and enter into the life of abundant opportunities.

MICRO CAR OF THE PAST

This is strange. I have never seen a microcar before and seeing one at youtube is amazing. It still runs after all this year. The microcar is more interesting to ride as compare to motor bike.

What is a "MICROCAR"?
It is basically small car mostly with two seater built in the late 1940's- pre-1964 range with Engine sizes of 700cc or less (many are 250cc and 50cc) and 2 doors or less. Would you use this vehicle if it saves you petrol? I doubt it.

You can find great pictures of the wonderful microcar at http://www.microcarmuseum.com/ or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07ub5rBdrE4.

Choose between employee or business owner?

Can you become rich working with others?

Can you become rich working with others? It all depends really. It depends on your salary, plan, budget, investment and many more factors. Some people do be come rich eventually working for others but it takes time, more effort, well structured investment plan, profitable investment and so on. Obviously you can not run a business while working for someone else. If they find out you will loose your job. Or you can hire someone to run your business but the whole business decision and planning must come from you. So you cannot runs away from the business.

However there are some of us are meant to be employee. To work for the rest of their life for others and make the others even more riches. When you asked them why, they will answer, I feel comfortable and safe. I don’t need to crack my head running the business. At the end of the month I will get my salary. They considered it a financial security. My friends, nowadays there is no such thing as permanent and secure job anymore. Even if you work with the government, you can still loose your job if the government wants to close the unit or section and you are being offered VSS (voluntarily surrender of service).

Being an average employee, you give your entire life to others to construct how much money you can earn, how you spend your time, where you can work, even a list of the do’s and the don’t and so on. You basically have no freedom to control your time and your destiny. You have to follow their instruction or else find another job.

What about high paying job like CEO? Obviously you can earn more than the average employee but still you have no freedom. The company pays you higher wages to be the CEO, most important employee in the company and they will expect even more from the CEO. You have to surrender all your time to benefit the company. You spend most of your time in the office. You have to work until late at night to catch up with the business dateline. The company expectation from the CEO is very high and unimaginable. If your performance is poor the company will sacked you. Either ways you will loose.

On the other hand, by being self employee or business owner, the scenario is the opposite of being employee. You have more freedom to choose where you want to be. You construct your own destiny. Planned your own time and most of all you can decide and device a strategic business plan that can bring more money into your company. But there’s a catch. All of this comes with a risk. But then again in business, no venture no gain, no risk no business.

In the end it is all entirely up to you to decide what you want in life. If you feel that being employee is fine with you, so be it. But if you feel that you want more out of life and free to choose your destiny and have control of your time, money, then doing business is for you. Definitely doing business can make you rich but being an employee, Im doubtful.

Don't feel envy

All of us want some thing in life. Be it money, become rich, have beautiful wives, big manhood and many more. Most of us are ambitious and wants something of extra out of life. However we do have our own personal limitation which prevent us from doing more than we are capable of.
Therefore we strive to make the most of our ability to achieve something worthwhile. To certain extend there are some even dare and prepare to sacrifice.

It is human nature to feel envious of someone else achievement or gain i.e. richness, money, luxury...we all do. Little do we know that most of these are not easily acquire without much effort. You can't get good examination result just by being lazy and sitting doing nothing. We need to work for it. If you have a successful business, you have to do even more, wake up as early as others. You must be highly motivated and fired up to do better in business so you can earn more than usual. Therefore feeling envy of their success is really a bloody waste of your time. You are better off doing something useful. On the other hand, it is wise to learn from their achievement. Find what formula do they use to achieve great wealth?

I once have this good idea that no one ever thought of doing that will make me a lot of money but as I said, it is not a simple process to do. I do not have the desire and determination to put forward the idea and make it work. In the end someone has figure it out because I’m too slow to take action. But instead of learning from this incident, I feel envious of his achievement.

By right, I should have tried to work out how he did it and if that route would suit me. What are the criteria, technique, and behavior and so on that enables him to be successful and wealthy? Ask myself why am I a failure? I should have used his achievement to inspire me to be successful instead of envy for him. You know what, to help ease the pain of envious, i started to make excuses why I didn't do it, why I cannot achieve it e.g. I don't have the startup capital, I don't have the know how, I'm not that business minded, I'm not that clever, I'm rather stupid actually..etc a lot of excuses. If you feel the same, stop feeling sorry for yourself. No body can help you but yourself. You have the power to choose your destiny. You can choose to be rich or poor. You decide what you want to be not someone else. Stop giving excuses.

However, in rare cases the "envy" do and may sometime help to give you motivation and drive to help achieve more or better result. When you feel envy, you start to think how can you be more better, useful, clever, brilliant, come up with better idea and technique, ......But you have to be careful not to allow "envy" to control you or else you will ends up nothing. Guess what you back to square one.

Can Money Solve your problem?

How many of us think that money can solve or fix problem in our life? For example, by having this amount of money, I could definitely fix this problem in my life. Is this sound familiar to you? If only I have X amount of money, I could have long ago start the business or I won’t be in this mess if only I have that X amount of money. Is money the absolute solution to our present problem in our life? Most of the prominent author in money management will agreed that money is not the solution. They will say something like; money will not make you happy, thinner or popular, will not deliver lasting, meaningful peace of mind and so on. Then they will go on saying that there are plenty of rich, fat, unhappy people with no real friends.

Having money to me does help solve what ever problem we have at that moment or in the months to come only if you know how to control, manage and use it wisely. Money by itself has no brain. Money is dependable on us to make them in good use. We can throw the money or burn it or put them to good use. For example spoon by itself is no use. But when we take the spoon and use it as it is intended for, it is then be come useful (to us).

To me, money can do wonders if you use and manage it wisely. I have seen a person who earns $5000 a month but still struggling to survive. Surprisingly, a person who earns less, say $ 3000 can live without much struggle. Another case where a man won a lottery in the amount of few hundred thousand and a few months after that he is back to where he use to be. The money does not solve his problem.

However, money can only and will solve you problem if you know how to manage and use it wisely. I think we need to find the cure to our problems first and then find a way of funding that cure. " it is the oil that smoothes the wheels. It isn't the engine".

Naughty Necktie

Whoever thought that a necktie can become naughty sometime? The guy who owns this necktie seems to have enjoyed it very much. According to the owner, the tie is made of polyester, has a plasticky sheen and a "Rockford Files hired goon" pattern. It brings you back into the 70's era.
Now this is the interesting part, when you flip it over, hidden under the necktie is a completely naked lady holding a sword (unfortunately the image is censored).Imagine if you wear this necktie and walk around the office. It feels excited isn’t to know a naked lady is hanging from your neck. But be careful don’t get caught showing it to a lady boss otherwise she might branded you as a pervert.

Apple established itself as one of the leading innovators in personal computing technology a year ago by introducing the Lisa, a synthesis and extension of human-interface technology that has since been widely imitated. Now the company has strengthened that reputation with a new machine, the Macintosh (above). In terms of technological sophistication and probable effect on the marketplace, the Macintosh will outdistance the Lisa as much as the Lisa has outdistanced its predecessors. The Macintosh arrives, finally, after a history of colorful rumors. It will cost from $1995 to $2495, weighs 22.7 pounds, and improves on the mouse-window-desktop technology started by the impressive but expensive Lisa computer. A system with printer and second disk drive costs about $900 more, but even at that price, the Macintosh is worth waiting for.

Vintage three wheeled electric powered Robot

MECHANICAL RAT FINDS WAY IN MAZE

As if endowed with powers of reasoning, a mechanical “rat” devised by Dr. Stevenson Smith, University of Washington psychologist, threads its way through an artificial maze like those used to study the behavior of living rats. The three-wheeled, electric-powered device moves along a grooved path that divides at several points, obliging the “rat” to choose which direction to follow. If it takes the wrong turn and enters a blind alley, mechanical feelers cause it to halt, retrace its journey, and try again until the whole course is negotiated successfully. The odd model is designed to show how automatic reflexes differ from thinking processes.

What is the level of education required to read your blog?

Is your blog readable?

I always fascinate and feel a bit envy whenever I read an article or came accross a well written website and sometime asking myself a question” how in the hell did he wrote those pieces of shit”. I was glued into reading the articles over and over again and found many unfamiliar words that I was forced to find the meaning. It was like, hey, this fellow is good, and he better off writing books instead of blog. On the other hand, there is a blog which was badly written but surprisingly it has more visitors then my blog. At the end of the day, what makes good content? Is it the storyline or is it the grammar or both. Anyway, what ever it is, it good to know what the level of education is required to understand your blog. I found this after visiting my fellow bloggers and I kind of like the idea behind it. I am not quite sure whether the rating is accurate but who's care. Most importantly is your message get accross and understandable. So go and give it a try.

Life isn’t fair.

Who says life is fair? If life is fair there won’t be any war going on in this world today. As such, there won’t be any loser, bankrupt, stress, mad, insane, in human and so on.
I have experienced dealing with house developer trying to get some compensation due to late delivery of the property and instead, I lost money and time as well as look a bit dumb. Sometime we have to except this as a fact of life. I was so sure that I will win the case but little that I know when dealing with lawyers, they have the knowledge (to make money out of you) that I don’t have. Therefore, learn to live with them and forget about trying or attempting to get rid of them on the ground that they make money out of the poor, innocent and gullible public. The problem with the poor, innocent and gullible public, they walk in there with their wallets open crying, “help yourself”. And then complain they are broke, no one gives them a fair chance, life isn’t fair, no one siding me, it’s not my fault, they ought to be a law against it and so on. Always be reminded that there are lots of hungry shark out there, just don’t bleed. Or else you know what to expect.

Swapping one single red paper clip for a house

This is an example of a successful deal making in action. His name is kyle Macdonald from Montreal, Canada. His traded his way from one single red paperclip to a house in the duration of nine months. How did he do it? Traded a red paperclip for a house? Unbelievable it may seem but he did actually acquire the house. To summarize the process, this is how he did it:

a)He setup up his own website named http://oneredpaperclip.blogspot.com/, offering to swap his one red paperclip for anything ( except shit ).

b) He swapped it for a pen in the shape of a fish.

c) He swapped this for a smiley face doorknob.

d) He swapped this for a portable barbeque.

e) He swapped this for a portable genset.

f) He swapped this for a instant party pack and keg of beer.

g) He swapped this for a snowmobile.

h) He swapped this for a trip to British Columbia.

i) He swapped this for a truck.

j) He swapped this for a recording contract.

k) And in the end he swapped this for a house in Phoenix, Colorado.

Not Bad for eleven steps little deal. He says he is going to keep on doing trading until he owns a house. For how long he’s keep doing it? No body knows.

“Really, I'm looking for nothing in particular, just to make a trade and see where this goes. So if you have anything you'd like to offer in exchange for the house, and I mean anything, be sure to send in your offer!” said Kyle.

LOW VISION

(How to help an infant/child grow up with low vision)

Our child was born with low vision. To be specific the eye doctor said it was PHPV (Persistent Hyperplastic Primary Vitreous). The problem lies in the optic nerve. Images seen through the eyes do not reach the point of vision at the back of the eye as the optic nerve. Why this happens? Our doctor could not explain. It’s a birth defect that happens to 1 in 100,000 people. Something that doesn’t happen often apparently. He is very nearsighted and can see just the first two lines on the eye chart even with spectacles. The spectacles helped him see the second line.

Anyway, it was devastating to us, to say the least. Parents who have a child born with a disability will often feel this way as it is unexpected and many are not ready to cope and don’t know how to cope. Unless you are a professional eye doctor plus psychologist, it’s something you have to deal with and something you have to learn about as your child grows up. Many people will have a negative reaction to your child’s disability but this should not stop you from giving him/her the best and from teaching him/her how to cope and grow up as normally as possible. The most important things is to teach him/her self esteem, independence in getting about, and ways to adjust to this different way of looking at things.

The more time you spend and invest in your child’s upbringing, the better he/ she will be able to cope and the more loved he/she will feel despite having a disability in life. Life goes on, and so must we.

We, as parents have had to learn from scratch on how to help our child. We are our child’s first teacher. When our child was just a few months old the eye doctor recommended that we train him to focus by giving him a lot of bright and stimulating things look at with the hope that it will help him while his eyes are still developing. Below are a few things we have tried and tested. Although he remains nearsighted, he has learnt to focus and read and write. We hope it will help you in some way. Do consult your child’s eye doctor and read as much books or articles as you can. Improving your own knowledge does help. We have been given pointers by our ophthalmologist on a few eye training which we will share with you.

MOBILES

Bright and colourful musical Mobiles will not only attract your low vision child to its sound but also train him/her to focus. You need not make it go around. If you do wind it up, it goes around slowly and will help your child train his/her eyes on moving objects.

You can also make your own from light materials that can be hung up. Be creative and imaginative. Find handicraft pointers from books, magazines, friends, teachers or the internet.

PLAYGYM

Again something colourful and bright for your baby to focus on. Some have music to attract your child’s attention. When he/she is able to reach out while lying on his/her back, the toys will not only train the eyes to focus but also the arm and finger muscles to hold and grasp. Later the baby will be able to spin the toys for entertainment. Be careful to make sure the paint/plastic is LEAD FREE if you do allow your baby to bite the toys.

SHAPE SORTER

Shape sorters can come in various designs. Some are in the form of cups. Some are in the form of rings and others are boxes etc. The brighter and more colourful they are the better.

These too you can make on your own. Find colourful plastic cups. Get boxes out from your storage area and paint them or wrap them in present paper. Use your imagination.

WALL POSTERS

There are many types for many age levels. Choose one suitable for your child’s age. Toddlers and younger children like posters with large colourful pictures. Post them at the child’s eye level on blank walls around the house to give your child something to focus on as he/she learns to move around the house. Use blue tack instead of selotape or double sided tape. Blue tack are easily removed and don’t ruin your wall/paint. They can also be reused again and again.

Often adults forget that there is nothing for kids to look at. Most pictures and paintings are at adults’ eye level.

PICTURE BOOKS

These come in various sizes. Some are made of soft, colourful cloth, some are made from hardcover with thick pages and others are the usual type of books with soft pages. The more advance ones are electronic books which uses batteries and even have sounds with the pictures. Depending on your budget, get some suitable for your child’s age.

The pictures sometimes come with words and sometimes not. The child can look at the pictures at his/her own eye comfort level. You cannot force a low vision child to look at a book like a person with normal sight would. This is torturing the child. If others make comments, tell them your child has low vision. There is nothing to be ashamed about.

If you can’t afford brand new books, shop around for second hand ones or make your own. Get sheets of cardboard paper (discarded cardboard boxes are a good place to start) and cut out pictures from magazines or newspaper.

READING BOOKS

Depending on your child’s vision, you can still buy books for them. As they grow older, you and your eye doctor/optometrist will be able to decide what font size your child will be able to read. People with low vision may not be able to see far but some do have good near sight and small writings are not a problem for them. The larger and bold the writing the easier for a low vision person to read it.

I have a few sample of different font size here for comparisons.

If your child still has problems reading the larger font sizes, you can use magnifying glasses and there are also various equipments which you can use to magnify the writings in book. Contact your nearest Blind/low vision centre or Eye doctor for more information on these equipments.

PUZZLES

For older kids, there are puzzles with small to extra large pieces available in the market. Choose those suitable for your child’s vision level. This is a fun way for him/her to focus, first on the small items then on the larger picture once it is done.

NIB SIZE, CLARITY

Once your child starts to go to school it is good to help him/her as much as possible in being able to write as well as read his/her own writing.

Start with pencils and colour pencils which have large nibs so that when your child starts to scribble or write, he/she will be able to see the effects of the pencil. Compare pencils nibs and clarity of writing when buying them. Very light writing are those marked with HB or H. Darker ones are B or 2B.

COLOUR

Low vision people can see darker colours better than lighter ones. Darker ones are like Dark Blue, Black or Purple. Medium colours are like Red, Green and Orange. Light colours are like yellow, light green and cream. Unless used on a dark paper, light colours cannot be easily seen.

If your child has the added problem of colour blindness, consult your eye doctor on which colour he/she can see best. Use these to your child’s advantage as he/she grows up.(ie; buy clothes and toys in these colours).

When your child is older and can read buy your child his/her own colour pencil set and write the names of the colour (with permanent ink) at the end of the colour pencil with large bold print. Sometimes school work requires that a child colour a certain picture this or that colour which can be quite frustrating for the colour blind child.

DEPTH PERCEPTION

Train your child to see depth perception. Get him/her to colour sample pictures like this and to look at art pictures which has depth perception.

SEQUENCING

This exercise trains the child’s eyes to focus from one thing to anther. You can make it easier by spelling and reading the word for him/her but if he/she is old enough let them try it on their own. Let them be independent.

This second exercise is harder. Not only is the writing smaller but there are more numbers/alphabet to follow. You can help by enlarging the writing for your child if he/she still can see it with the help of magnifying glass.

SEEING VERTICAL, HORIZONTAL AND DIAGONAL

A school age child should be able to spell simple words and find the words in the box. You can help by making a window on a piece of paper or by giving him/her a ruler to locate the words. Once he/she is getting good at this exercise, take away the ruler/ window and let him/her use the eyes instead. This may take time to improve but be persistent and patient.

Give encouragement.

MEMORY IMPROVEMENT 1

This exercise is similar to the one above but it is harder. It has more words to search for. Once your child knows how to read, train him/her to memorize the words before looking for them.

MEMORY IMPROVEMENT 2

Be creative. Find other ways to help your child to improve his/her memory so that he/she will be able to learn better and faster once he/she is of school going age. Even if he/she has to stand near the board to see something, he/she won’t need to do it often.

1. Shopping lists: Start with just a few things to buy (pretend) then as his/her memory improves, make the list longer and longer.

2. Object identification: Find a picture book, magazine or photo. Start with those which has only a few things or people in them. Give a time of say 1 min to memorize. Take away the picture or photo and ask your child to tell you what he/she sees in the picture. Its al right to make mistakes. Keep practicing until he/she gets better. Then find a harder picture or photo to look at and to memorize.

3. Sentences: Start with short sentences, then longer and longer. Don’t expect him/her to memorize whole paragraphs yet. Keep practicing as far as he/she can go. Don’t pressure him/her. Make it fun. Poems are good sentences to remember. Start with Nursery Rhymes.

4. Giving faces names; Cut out faces from magazine or newspapers. Give them a pretend name. Ask your child to identify and remember their names. Take away their labels and try again. Make more and more faces and names to remember as your child improves. One way of doing this is by imagining a funny feature of the person and linking it to the name (ie: Mrs White has white hair, Mr. Becks wear Specs. etc.)

BAMBOO FLOOR MATS

Instead of carpets have you ever thought of other alternative floor coverings? The choice is quite limited.

If you live in a concrete house or apartments, concrete floors can be quite cold and slippery. You also want to minimize the noise level that your neighbours can hear from their ceiling. Do you have pets or children? They can increase your cleaning efforts around the house and carpets take a lot of work to keep clean.

Recently, a new type of floor coverings have appeared in the shops in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. They are decorated bamboo coverings. Just like mats but with more varied and modern decorations

They make wonderful concrete floor coverings, are nice to look at, minimizes noise and are easier to clean than carpet. They are better than rugs because they also minimizes the collection of dust mites which can cause allergic reaction in some people. Plus bamboo lasts quite a long time. Shown here are a few samples of these wonderful new floor mats. I personally like them and bought one for my home.

TWINS

Ever seen twins? How about twin bananas. Well here they are…

You get two for the price of one.

HEAVEN AND HELL

HEAVEN AND HELL

(Do they exists?)

I said that I would do research and write about Heaven and Hell. Well my research is conclusive. These two places do exist. The only problem is that most people have seen only a bit of what either one has to offer. Their journey to Heaven or Hell is only a short one because they have to return to their human lives here on Earth. Only those who die for good will know what more these two places have had to offer and the dead seldom tell. Believe me there’s more, but I will not go into detail here.

People die every day. Some manage to live while others never come back from the brink of death. I will not put into words something which is best described in pictures or experience. For this, I encourage you to listen and watch a few video clips from people who have had the experience of death and whats on the other side. These are called Near Death Experiences (NDE). Descriptions of Heaven and Hell are consistently similar from one person to another and there are thousands of people with these experiences.

Take the advice from those who have died before. I don’t think they would like to joke or make up stories about these things.

The video clips I found title below are on YouTube.

Heaven and Hell near death Experiences (Experience recall)

This man died...returned...Heaven and Hell are real (Experience recall)

An accurate depiciton of Hell by Bill Weiss and Many Baxter (Graphic picture simulation)

Choo Thomas taken to Heaven and Hell (Experience recall)

There’s more. ... But some video clips on YouTube are just pure nonsense and made up to joke about the afterlife. You have to use your common sense to decide which ones are real and which ones are not.

SUMMARY

This is a book written by Judy and Bill Guggenheim on research done on existence after death. Quoted:

Death is simply a shedding of the physical body like the butterfly shedding its cocoon. It is a transition to a higher state of consciousness where you continue

to perceive, to understand, to laugh and to be able to grow.

Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross M.D
German-Swiss Doctor who works with dying people

Dr. Elisabeth has had After Death Communications herself: -

I was at a crossroad. I feel I needed to give up my work with dying patients. That day, I was determined to give notice and leave the hospital and the University of Chicago. It wasn’t an easy decision because I really loved my patients.

I walked out of my last seminar on death and dying towards the elevator. At that moment, a woman walked towards me. She had an incredible smile on her face, like she knew every thought I had.

She said. “Dr Ross, I’m only going to take two minutes of your time. If you don’t mind, I’ll walk you down to your office.” It was the longest walk I have ever taken in my life. One part of me knew that this was Mrs Johnson, a patient of mine who had died and been buried almost a year ago. But I’m a scientist, and don’t believe in ghost and spooks!

I did the most incredible reality testing I’ve ever done. I tried to touch her because she looked kind of transparent in a waxy way. Not that you could see furniture behind her, but not quite real either. I know I touched her, and she had feeling to her.

We came to my office, and she opened the door. We went inside and she said, “I had to come back for two reasons. Number one, I wanted to thank you and Reverend Smith once more for what you have done for me. But the real reason why I had to come back is to tell you not to give up your work on death and dying. Not yet.”

I realized consciously that maybe indeed this was Mrs. Johnson. But I thought nobody would ever believe me if I told this to anybody. They really would thing I had slipped!.

So my scientist in me needed proof. I needed a sheet of paper with anything written in her handwriting, and hopefully her signature.

This woman knew my thoughts and knew I had no intention to ever giver her note to Reverend Smith. However, she took a piece of paper and wrote a message and signed it with her full name. Then with the biggest smile of love and compassion and understanding, she said to me, “Are you satisfied now?”

Once more she said, “You cannot give up your work on death and dying. Not yet. The time is not right. We will help you. You will know when the time is right. Do you promise?” The last thing I said to her was “I promise.” And with that, she walked out.

No sooner was the door closed, I had to go and see if she was real. I opened the door, and there was not a soul in that long hallway!

Dr Elisabeth story defied everything Bill knew and understood and assumed was trued about death and life after death, and it forced him to re-examined all his beliefs for any logical explanations but found none. Bill decided to find personal answers for some of mankind’s oldest questions: Is there life after death? Do we enter a new dimension or level of existence when our physical life is over? Will we be united with our friends and family members who have already died? Is it possible for our deceased loved ones to communicated with us now?

So began Bill and Judy’s research into life after death. There are many books on this topic. What they came up was a detailed book on Communication from the dead in various forms or After Death Communications (ADC for short). They are members of the International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS since 1981) and talked with hundreds of people (first hand) who reported having near death experiences, out-of-body journeys, after death communications and other kinds of spiritual experiences. These Bill and Judy wrote down and categorized.

According to them The Amerrican Health Magasing published the results of a poll (Survey) conducted by the National Opinion Research Centre of America in its Jan=Fen 1987 issue. The survey was directed by Andrew Greeley, the well know Catholic priest and author. The finding show that 42% of American Adults believe that have been in contact with someone who has died and 67% of all widows believe they have had a similar experience. These figures are quite high and show that communication with the dead through various methods occur more often than most people assume.

Many people are convinced that after death communications are not real. They are often dismissed as hallucinations, imaginations, delusions, fantasies etc. ADC’s are the result of wish fulfillment and memories caused by grief. Bill and Judy’s interview with those directly having ADC on a one to one basis show that there is not necessary grief involved when having and ADC. Some do not even know that a friend or family has died and that person has come to wish them goodbye or convey a message.

Their research done with several boundaries to outline what is termed as an After Death Communication or not;-

It must be a direct one to one experience. No medium, psychic, hypnotist or third party is involved.

It is a spontaneous event. The deceased initiated the contact. Seances, ouija boards, crystal balls or similar devices used to make contact with the dead are not counted as ADC’s.

The ADC Project started in Orlando, Florida in May 1988 with 1,000 flyers, 1,000 business cards, a telephone line, a post office box and a checking account. They found people who were willing to be interviewed everywhere they went including support groups, churches, hospices, personal growth classes, conferences, social organizations bereavement groups and spiritual bookstores. This project took 7 years to fulfill its purpose.

They had collected 3,300 firsthand experiences in all 50 Amereican states and ten Canadian provinces. The people interviewed are from all walks of life and represent diverse social, educational, occupational and economic background. They range from a 8 year old boy to a 92 year old widower. Almost all had a Christian or Jewish religious upbringing and are still practicing. Those interviewed were in good health (not senile or crazy) and were never involved in drugs or alcohol at the time of their experiences.

ADC’s are very common in other parts of the world, where they are socially accepted as real communications from the dead. The people who have had these experiences share them freely and joyously with others, and Bill & Judy believes that everyone gains form discussing these events openly.

Book Contents

1. The After Death Communication (ADC) Project: A leap of faith

Introduction to how the research came about and comments from others including doctors and professionals.

2. Sensing a Presence: Sentient ADC’s

This is the most common type. People report having an intuitive awareness or inner knowledge that their deceased loved one was with them in the same room or area. The presence felt familiar and conveyed the identity and personality of the one who had died. Many can sense the emotions and mood of that person and some may even receive non-verbal messages this way. They know when that person first appeared and when he/she is gone. People feel happy when a loved one visits them even for a short while.

3. Hearing a Voice: Auditory ADC’s

This is also a common type of ADC. Some people report hearing an audible voice that was from an outside source (not their own thoughts). This is called telepathic communications which is also known as mind-to-mind contact, mental communication or thought transference. The message or thought is usually brief and to the point like a telegram. Some people are not even sure they heard the message until it is repeated a second time. Some understand what it means the first time. Many times lives have been saved because of these short messages in a person’s head.

4. Feeling a Touch: Tactile ADC’s

This is a less common type of ADC. The sensation can be felt as a light tap, a gentle touch, a soft caress, a tender kiss, a comforting arm or even a hug. Each one is don in a loving way to express emotional support or reassurance. Regardless of what kind of touch they feel, people easily recognize their deceased loved ones. Touch or Tactile ADC usually happen between people who have had a very close relationship. Those who have died return to convey affection and encouragement to the living especially through tough times and emotional turmoil. Sometimes a voice is also heard during this time.

5. Smelling a Fragrance: Olfactory ADC’s

This is one more common ADC. Typical scents include the fragrance of a perfume, cologne, after shave lotion, flowers, food, drink, tobacco, commercial product or anything else that one can associate with a loved one. The scent is usually unusual with their surroundings or the room/place they are in and there is no source for the smell. Sometimes two people can smell the same scent. Sometimes a touch, a feeling or a voice may be present with the scent making the identity of the deceased loved one more clear.

6. Partial Appearances: Visual ADC’s

Seeing a dead loved one who has returned for a visit is very dramatic but quite common type of ADC. People report seeing only part of a body or if they saw the whole body it will appear less then solid. Some partial appearances can be in the form of a bright light, a face in a bright light, the upper part of a body, a misty body etc. Sometimes their dead relatives talk to them or send messages or touch them to say that they have crossed over to the other side and that they are happy, healthy and safe. Many who got this experience are comforted.

7. Full Appearances: Visual ADC’s

Full appearances are usually made to demonstrate the deceased loved ones are healed and whole, despite their age, physical disability or injury at the time of death. Nearly all are much happier and freer than when they had a physical body. They convey a greater love, compassion and wisdom than they had while still alive. These experiences are so warm and comforting that the living feel that they have been updated by the new condition of the deceased relative or friend and find peace from the experience.

8. A Glimpse Beyond: ADC Visions

Having seen a ADC vision is like looking through an opening into another dimension and intuitively knowing you are seeing beyond this world into a spiritual one. External visions are seen with your eyes open and may be compared to looking at projection of a movie. Internal visions are seen through your mind either with your eyes closed or open. Some are two dimensional while others are three dimensional and have bright vivid colours that radiate their own inner light, similar to a stained glass window that has light from behind. Messages can come through and sometimes people can talk to the deceased loved ones. These are rare ADC’s.

9. Encounters at Alpha: Twilight ADC’s

During the half awake and half asleep level of awareness or the Alpha state people are so relaxed that they see ADC’s. This level of semi-consciousness can also be attained through mediation exercises, hypnosis and deep prayer. Even daydreaming and feelings of creativeness can be an Alpha state. In this state you are often in a relaxed, open and receptive frame of mind. Various types of ADC’s can be experience when in this state maybe a presence, a voice, a touch, a scent, an appearances, a vision etc.

10. More than a Dream: Sleep-State ADC’s

Many people reported that they had been contacted by a deceased loved one while they were sound asleep. Because they didn’t have any other name for their experience, they usually called it a ‘dream’. However, most add that it wasn’t like an ordinary haphazard dream, jumbled up, fragmented, filled with symbolism and incomplete in many ways. In contrast a sleep-state ADC feels like actual face-to-face visits with deceased ones. They are much more orderly, colourful, vivid and memorable than most dreams. In fact some may even be visions during the sleep period similar to ADC’s while one is awake.

11. Homeward Bound: Out-Of-Body ADC’s

Out of Body Experiences (OBE’s) are not a new phenomenon. They have been constantly reported throughout history. There are a lot of books on OBE’s. Occurances of ADC’s during OBE’s are less common too. Some people can temporarily leave their physical bodies and travel to far and near places. Some people claim they are able to visit other dimensions, including the spiritual realms. Spontaneous Out of Body ADC’s can occur while you are awake in the Alpha state or during sleep. People say the experience is more real than life itself.

12. Person-to-Person: Telephone ADC’s

As it implies telephone ADC’s is when one receives a phone call from a deceased loved one. They may sound as clear as an ordinary everyday call or they may sound far and distant and sometimes they come through ‘white noise’ or background noise on the telephone. Some people have reported receiving a telephone ADC’s even when the phone line has been temporarily cut off and even with witnesses nearby. Some ADC’s are also experienced during sleep but seem so real. After the call there won’t bee any kind of disconnect sound or even a dial tone. The phone will be silent as though the line has been cut.

13. Material Matters: ADCs of Physical Phenomena

A common type of ADC are unusual things happening around the house following the death of a relative or friend for example electrical equipments being turned off and on, mechanical objects being activated, pictures and other items being moved, windows and doors opening and closing despite there being not wind or anyone else about at the time. People regard these events as messages from their deceased loved ones to show that they are still in existence or to show that they want you to remember them. There is the case of a mother who kept finding (in different places) a smiling picture of her deceased teenage son. He wanted her not to mourn and be sad for he was in a happier place now. He seldom smiled in his pictures and that particular one was a rare one of him smiling.

14. Butterflies and Rainbows: Symbolic ADC’s

Some people are sent a sign spontaneously as a gift, while others ask or pray to receive one. Depending on their belief system, they may ask the deceased to give them a sign or they may pray to God for one. Typical symbols included rainbows, flowers, butterflies, birds, insects, animals or things. Whether a sign comes immediately or takes time to arrive, most people intuitively recognize their sign right away and feel it is intended for them. This can be sad for the deceased loved ones who are trying to communicate with them for the living may not be receptive and try to avoid them.

16. Timing is Everything: ADC’s before the news

This sort of ADC happens before a person learns of the death of a friend or loved one. They have not had the chance to grieve or have grief-induced hallucinations as many people would claim. Some contacts are made soon after the person dies to warn others of their death.

17. Expect the Unexpected: ADC’s year later

Some ADC’s occur within the second to fifth year following the death of a loved one and some occur many years later when it is totally unexpected. Their purposes are more specific than earlier contacts like to warn of eminent danger. Despite being dead, they still feel a sense of connection to the live ones and are aware of your daily life and are watching over you with love and compassion.

18. Validation: Evidential ADC’s

An ADC experience is evidential when you learn something you did not know and had no way of knowing before. For instance, you may be told the location of a lost object and then being able to find it. Descriptions of these ADC’s may be the same or different depending on each point of view. The value of having a witness is confirmation that your experience was not imaginary but real as in the example of a man who saw his deceased mother waving from her front porch after the funeral, as she always used to when she was alive. The man did not cry during the funeral or afterwards until his wife confirmed that she too saw his mother waving goodbye at her front porch. This confirmed that he was not dreaming and the event touched him so much that he broke down and cried, pouring out his grief once and for all.
